Level 3: BCS MTP Consultant (z/OS)

Below are details of the skills that must be demonstrated in the examination in order to succeed at this level, and the prerequisite education and/or experience expected.

Examination

The examination will be conducted over one day in invigilated test conditions. The disciplines and knowledge tested will comprise:

  • z/OS Structure & Flow - knowledge of theory
  • Advanced JCL functions and utilities - knowledge of theory and practical expertise
  • Understanding & Maintaining Catalogs - knowledge of theory and practical expertise
  • Diagnosing z/OS Supervisor & Stand Alone Dumps - practical expertise (optional)
  • Writing & maintaining re-entrant exits- practical expertise (optional)
  • Using WLM & RMF Reports- Knowledge of theory and practical expertise (optional).

Skills demonstrated

In order to qualify at this stage candidates will be expected to:

demonstrate an in-depth understanding of z/OS's structure by:

  • identifying problem areas during an IPL
  • tracing the task management control blocks in a dump
  • installing and enabling SVCs
  • understanding problem and exit areas in job management
  • understanding the issues surrounding serialisation
  • using the subsystem interface
  • understanding the problems in scheduling SRBs
  • resolving problems associated with Cross Memory Services
  • analysing storage control blocks in a dump
  • isolating I/O problem areas.
demonstrate the ability to resolve SVC and standalone dumps by:
  • using the appropriate diagnostic procedure for each type of dump
  • identifying the failing operating system component in standalone and SVC dumps
  • using various operating system data-gathering facilities, such as system traces.
demonstrate the ability to understand and write and maintain exits by:
  • using advanced addressability techniques
  • applying 24, 31 & 64 bit addressing concepts
  • writing re-entrant code
  • using MVS control blocks in exit routines
  • using supervisor services macros
  • producing and invoking ESTAE routines.
demonstrate the ability to maintain manage z/OS performance:
  • setting up the WLM environment
  • using Service Classes effectively
  • analysing RMF reports.

Prerequisite knowledge/experience

Candidates for the Level 3 BCS Mainframe Technology Professional (z/OS) certification will be expected to have at least four years of experience in a mainframe-based data centre and will have Level 2 BCS Mainframe Technology Professional (z/OS) certification.
