BCS Mainframe Technology Professional examinations appeals procedure
1. General
There may be circumstances in which candidates wish to have their examination
results reappraised, and the procedures set out below are designed to ensure
that such requests are dealt with in a fair and consistent way.
Appeals fall into three types:
a. those relating to extenuating circumstances external
to the examination itself such as illness, non-attendance
for good cause or conditions in the examination room;
b. those relating to the fairness of the examination questions or process,
c. those relating to the marking of a written examination.
Appeals under categories ‘a’ and ‘ b’ are dealt
with in section 2, those under category ‘c’ in section 3.
All evidence available will be considered at the time of reaching a decision.
2. Appeals
2.1 Making an Appeal
A candidate may seek a review of a decision on the basis of evidence of
extenuating circumstances that were not known to the examining
body at the time of reaching a decision.
The candidate should provide a written request to the Examinations Manager
not later than 4 weeks after the release of the examination results.
The appeal should be accompanied by a re-examination
fee of £100.00
+ VAT per examination which will be returned to the candidate if the appeal
is upheld. The request should include the candidate's name, candidate number,
the full title(s) of the examination(s) at issue and the date(s) taken.
The candidate should identify all the reasons for the appeal
and provide full supporting evidence including a full medical report or other
documentary evidence where appropriate.
2.2 Consideration of the Appeal
The case for appeal is considered initially by the Chairman of the Subject
Board who will decide if there is a prima facie case. If so, he or she will
decide what evidence should be provided to the Subject Board to enable it
to consider the appeal. This will always include the candidate's documentary
submission and may also include any or all of the following:
- The examination result;
- Examiners' or Invigilators' reports and any other papers related to the
examination;
- Additional input from the examiner(s) or invigilator requested by the
Chairman in response to the appeal;
- Any other evidence which the Chairman considers relevant.
The Subject Board must be quorate and shall include:
(a) The Chairman;
(b) A representative of the BCS;
(c) The Chairman of the appropriate Examiners Panel, or his/her nominee.
In exceptional circumstances, the Subject Board may decide to interview
one or more of the parties involved.
The results of the appeal will be recorded and the candidate notified in
writing by the Examinations Manager. The decision of the Subject Board in
either upholding or rejecting the appeal is final.
3. Re-marking written examinations
Examination scripts will not be remarked if they have already been double
marked, or single marked and then reviewed.
The candidate should provide a written request to the Examinations Manager
within 4 weeks of the release of the examination results.
The request should be accompanied by a fee of £100.00
per script, which will be returned to the candidate if the result is subsequently
changed as a consequence of the re-assessment. The request should include
the candidate's name, candidate number, the full title(s) of the paper(s)
at issue and the date(s) sat.
The script will be re-assessed by a member of the Subject Board or Examiners
Panel not previously responsible for the marking of the examination script.
The results of the re-assessment will be notified to the candidate in writing
by the Examinations Manager. The mark arrived at as a result of the re-assessment
will be final.
4. Access to Assessment Policy
BCS MTP seeks to provide equal access to assessment for all candidates, ensuring that there are no unnecessary barriers to assessment and that any special arrangements for candidates preserve the validity, reliability and integrity of the qualification.
